Death & Co. Drops a Safety Commitment, Best-Practices Statement, and Reopening Guide
June 25th, 2020

If a craft-cocktail institution like the bi-coastal Death & Co. can reopen its locations safely and responsibly, we all can. And the owners are making the tricky “how” part easier by publishing their commitment to safety and newly-implemented best practices for all to see and consider for their own businesses.

Similar to the speakeasy “rules” that have appeared the menus and websites of craft cocktail bars over the last 20 years, the dedicated page lays out the bar’s approach, strategy, and response to COVID in terms of staff/guest interaction and sanitation. Of course, any of these actions alone would have been a good idea in pre-COVID times. Combined, however, they present a convincing new set of standards that all venues might want to implement:

“ALL STAFF IS TRAINED IN UPDATED SANITARY AND WELLNESS PROTOCOLS AND ADHERES TO THE GUIDELINES OF OUR REOPENING PLAYBOOK

STAFF ARE REQUIRED TO COMPLETE DAILY WELLNESS CHECK AND LOG TEMPERATURE

ALL SURFACES ARE SANITIZED IN ACCORDANCE WITH CDC GUIDELINES ON A REGIMENTED AND CONSISTENT SCHEDULE

DAILY DEEP CLEAN OF ALL EQUIPMENT, FURNITURE, AND SURFACES

A SANITATION LEAD IS ON-SHIFT DURING ALL HOURS OF OPERATION

SAFE SOCIAL DISTANCING IS REQUIRED OF OUR TEAM AND GUESTS AT ALL TIMES

FACE COVERINGS ARE TO BE WORN AT ALL TIMES, EXCEPT WHEN EATING OR DRINKING

VOLUNTARY GUEST WELLNESS CHECK IN FOR CONTACT TRACING

WE ARE CASHLESS AND HAVE IMPLEMENTED A CONTACT-FREE PAYMENT SYSTEM

MENUS AVAILABLE IN DIGITAL AND SINGLE-USE FORMATS”

Going one huge step further, Death & Co.’s owners have also made available their comprehensive, downloadable 62-page reopening playbook. Similar to the 96-page Bar & Restaurant Revival Guide that has become a veritable bible for operators, this slick, easy-to-read plan covers everything from training staff to work in the “new normal” and implementing social distancing of guests to maintaining service standards and a step-by-step game plan should a staff member test positive for COVID-19. In the spirit of hospitality, these resources are free to all and sharable. And both tomes are must-reads of the moment for operators looking to open or reopen their doors safely.
